Oral Health Survey

Dental Service of the Department of Health will commence the territory-wide Oral Health Survey 2021 (“OHS 2021”) in November 2021 to collect updated and representative oral health information of the people in Hong Kong. In 2001 and 2011, the Department of Health (“DH”) had carried out similar oral health surveys.

The OHS 2021 is a cross-sectional survey targeted at the following five population groups:

  • 5-year-old children (invitation will be issued by the selected kindergartens)
  • 12-year-old youth (invitation will be issued by the selected schools)
  • 35-44-year-old adults (selected individuals had signed the consent form earlier during the Population Health Survey 2020)
  • 65-74-year-old older persons (selected individuals had signed the consent form earlier during the Population Health Survey 2020)
  • older persons aged 65 and above who are receiving long term care services (invitation will be issued by the selected service unit)

DH has commissioned the Faculty of Dentistry, the University of Hong Kong, to conduct questionnaire interview and oral examination for OHS 2021. The method of this survey will follow the basic methods recommended by the World Health Organization.

DH attaches great importance to data confidentiality. All staff involved in the fieldwork will carry a Staff Identity Card issued by DH for the purpose of identification. Members of the public may call the OHS hotline 2859 0291 to verify the Staff’s identity if in doubt. All personal data and contact information collected will be kept strictly confidential.

When conducting interviews and oral examinations, all contractor staff will adopt appropriate precautionary infection control measures according to the local situation of the COVID-19 pandemic.
